Witness The Material Girl's Classic Ballads and Pop-Dance Hits Reincarnate at "Unlike a Virgin" Opposite Day's Art-Rock Interpretation of Madonna's Early Hits "The Immaculate Collection" Returns AUSTIN, TX - Just as Madonna is on the market yet again, art-rock gurus Opposite Day bring back their hit "Unlike a Virgin" show to Austin audiences, paying homage to the Queen of Pop on November 1 when they perform their interpretation of Madonna's "The Immaculate Collection" at Jovita's. If you knew the "Boy Toy" belt, bleached hair, and skirt-over-capri-pants-look all too well, join your fellow self-respecting Material Girl followers for Opposite Day's take on the first greatest hits compilation by the early 80's baddest bad girl. On November 1, Opposite Day will perform the entire IMMACULATE COLLECTION album, track-for-track, in order (listen here: http://www.oppositeday.com/madonna.html):
1. Holiday - skitzo new wavey with a big drum solo. THE IMMACULATE COLLECTIONThe Immaculate Collection is a compilation by Madonna, released on November 13, 1990 by Sire Records. Containing newly remixed versions of her greatest hits from 1983 to 1990, it also included two new tracks "Justify My Love" (with accompanying R-Rated video) and "Rescue Me." It is Madonna's second biggest-selling album in the U.S., only behind Like a Virgin and her biggest-selling album worldwide with more than 23 million copies sold. In the UK the compilation has sold 3.6 million copies, making her the most successful female in the UK album chart history. By the late 1990s, and after 20 million copies had been sold, the Guinness Book of World Records declared The Immaculate Collection to be the biggest selling 'hits' compilation album by a female artist. In 2003, the album was ranked number 278 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. OPPOSITE DAYOpposite Day was formed in 2001 in Austin, TX out of a desire to create music that makes you happy, frightened, enlightened, and confused at the same time. They call it "Educational Art-Rock for Animals." Referring to their latest album Safety First, the Austin Chronicle calls it: "an unruly, unpredictable stew as impressive as it is bewildering. Like an improbable Weezer/Red Hot Chili Peppers collaboration, guitars explode atop intimidating bass then lull into absurdist lyrical melodies." Currently, besides this Madonna business, the group is in the process of recording their 4th and 5th albums simultaneously, playing shows farther and farther away, and dressing up like tennis-playing bible salesmen. Drummer Pat Kennedy is one of Austin's most sought-after Jazz drummers, with a master's in performance from UT. Bassist Greg Yancey is a nationally-known luthier, hand-crafting all of the band's stringed instruments (www.yanceybasses.com). Guitarist and lead vocalist Sam Arnold has toured internationally as a pop/country/coverband sideman for local artists Sarah Sharp, Honeybrowne, and Mark Chandler. He also has a solo project (www.myspace.com/samarnoldsongs). |
